Information about COLCHESTER Being the oldest recorded town in Britain, some of the most important events in British history have taken place here. The town has experienced devastation by Boadicea, invasion the Normans and siege during the English Civil War. The town walls are built incorporating Britain’s largest Roman gateway, Balkerne Gate, a magnificent triumphal arch. Some two thirds of this wall still stands, the oldest town wall in Britain. Colchester Castle The Normans built over the remains of the Roman Temple of Claudius In the 16th Century, Flemish refugees began to arrive, fleeing from religious persecution in their homelands. They brought new prosperity to the town from their weaving industry. The area where they lived can still be seen just off the High Street and is known as the Dutch Quarter Nearby are Dedham Vale and Stour Valley, protected areas of outstanding natural beauty. It was here that John Constable painted many of his famous landscaoes. Today Colchester is a thriving, modern town. Its history and heritage combined with a superb range of shops, award winning attractions, an increasing influence of contemporary art and accommodation give the visitor an interesting variety of experiences, however long their stay.
